Henley Santas run for fun
Published 11/12/13

HENLEY was awash with Santa hats on Sunday morning as about 150 people took part in a short run or stroll for charity.

The third annual Santa on the Run event raised £500 for the Mayor’s five charities, Sue Ryder, the Chiltern Centre for disabled children, Headway, Riverside Counselling and Age UK Oxfordshire.

The two-mile course started and finished at the River and Rowing Museum, going via Mill Meadows, the station car parks and once round the perimeter of the Invesco Perpetual offices.

Free Santa hats were given to all participants, many of whom wore Christmas-themed costumes or red clothing to get into the festive spirit, while some children dressed as superheroes.

Fitness expert Angie Best took the runners through a warm-up before the race while members of Henley Lions Club provided hot tomato soup and hot chocolate at the end. The race was won by Harry Roe, 12, from Sonning Common. The Gillotts pupil won by several minutes despite taking a longer circuit by accident.

The event was organised by Mayor Stefan Gawrysiak, who led the group on a bicycle while dressed as Father Christmas, and Councillor Pam Phillips, who ran in a reindeer costume.

About 40 parents and pupils from Badgemore Primary School took part, as did a group from Sacred Heart primary.

Councillor Gawrysiak said: “It was absolutely superb. We had double the number on last year and it was great fun. Everyone was happy and chirpy and entered the spirit of the day by dressing up.”
