Flooding risk remains
Published 14/01/14

THE River and Rowing Museum in Henley has reopened but road closures remain in place due to floods.

The museum had been closed since Monday last week as visitors and staff could not gain access but it was open for business again yesterday.

Marketing manager Catherine Yoxall said: “It was a shame we had close for such a long time but we had no choice. It wasn’t safe to do anything else.

“We lost a couple of commercial bookings as a result because as an independent museum we need the revenue to keep us going but there was nothing we could do about it.”

The car park remains closed but visitors can park in the Mill Meadows car park.

Playhatch Road, between Sonning Bridge and Playhatch, is still closed but a flood warning for the area was lifted this morning. Remenham Lane also remains shut.

The road closures continue to cause traffic chaos for drivers, with long queues in Wargrave Road, Remenham Hill and Reading Road as drivers seek alternative routes.

Flood warnings remain in place along the Thames in communities between Henley and Medmenham as well as in Caversham, Wargrave and Shiplake but river levels are falling gradually.

The Environment Agency says the risk of flooding remains as more rain is forecast and the ground in many areas is already saturated.

It issued a “yellow” warning of ice this morning as temperatures dropped to 1C.
