Typhoon Appeal boosted by raffle
Published 14/01/14

ABOUT £250 was raised by a raffle in aid of the Philippines Typhoon Appeal.

Staff at the Chocolate Café in Thames Side, Henley, sold tickets to win two prizes.

Perfumes worth £500 were donated by Lynne Carter, owner of Fragrance Design at Highlands Farm, and a food hamper was donated by Vanessa Brady, whose partner, radio presenter Mike Read, presented a pop quiz in aid of the charity at the café last month.

Mayor Stefan Gawrysiak presented the prizes to the winners, Barry Rosier, from Remenham, who won the food hamper, and Karim and Nadya Ghanem, from Maidenhead, who won the perfumes.

Mr Rosier said: “It was the cause that appealed to me more than the prizes but I was very pleased to win.”

Mr Ghanem said: “It is nice to win but it is also nice to know that the money is going somewhere it is needed.”

The Henley café has been fund-raising for the appeal in support of Filipino waitress Maria Fe Paña, who moved to Britain three years ago.

Mrs Fe Paña said: “The money collected here will continue to help the people in my country, where new homes are starting to be built and children are going back to school.

“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the people here in Henley. ”

Vivienne Connery, who runs the cafe, said: “The money has all been collected in the last month from people coming into the café.”

She is now planning a sports quiz night featuring five local sports celebrities to raise more money.
