The village primary pupils and teachers were joined by parents for pancake races on the village green to mark the tradition of Shrove Tuesday.

The annual event is organised by the school, members of Stoke Row Independent Chapel and the Friends of Stoke Row.

Children brought their own pancakes and enjoyed freshly cooked ones after their races.

Year groups from the foundation class to year 6 were split into teams of girls and boys and there were also races for teachers and parents.

Competitors had to flip their pancakes once before setting off and again at the halfway point before sprinting to the finish line. Earlier, the children attended a special school assembly.

Headteacher Charlotte Harris said: “These pancake races are a Stoke Row tradition and very special. The children really enjoyed the races and eating the delicious pancakes.”

She thanked Judy Fox and Tilly Smith for organising the event.

Rev Sonia Jackson, minister of Stoke Row Independent Chapel, said: “This is a wonderful community event where lots of people work together and marks the beginning of Lent. The children love it.”

The teachers’ race winner was Rachel Doe while the parents’ races were won by Julia Barry and Ryan Bradley. The winning children were: Foundation, Ebie Roper and Marcel Roginski; Year 1 and 2, Rachel O’Bryne and Ben Chapman; Year 3, Frances Kimber and Harry Roberts; Year 4, Bea Bradley and PJ Cookson; Year 5, Nicola Lee and Danilo Mutavdzic; Year 6, Dani Tavener and Alex Darnborough.
