REPAIRS to the A4130 dual carriageway at Bix will begin in May and take up to 30 weeks to complete.
The drainage network will be replaced and the swallow hole will be excavated and reinstated with free granular material. The fast lanes in both directions will be resurfaced and the slow lane on the Oxford-bound carriageway will be reconstructed.
The road will be closed Henley-bound from May 12 to June 3 to allow a contra-flow traffic system to be installed.
During the contra-flow, the A4130 will be open to cars and light vehicles going both ways. Vehicles wider than 2m that cannot use the contra-flow system will have to follow the diversion. Access to Bix will be maintained at Rectory Lane but those exiting the village will have to use Old Bix Road. Broad Plat Lane will be closed. Resurfacing work will be carried out at the Bix end and Lower Assendon end under temporary traffic signals.
The B480 will be closed and vehicles must use the diversion through Nettlebed via the B481. A 30mph speed limit will be in force through the contra-flow and a free recovery service will be available. The recovery vehicle will be based by the Nettlebed roundabout.
Warning signs will be put up four weeks prior to the start of the work.
Oxfordshire County Council is replacing one-and-a-half miles of the drainage network, which runs from outside the Smith Centre in Fair Mile, Henley. Project leader Paul Rowforth said: “The road was put in in 1937 to 1939 and it has been done very well. The main structure is very good. There is a carrier drain on the cemetery side and at the moment very little water gets into the soakaway.”
He said that potholes would be filled in during the work.
Town and county councillor David Nimmo Smith said the road had come to the end of its life. It has taken three years to get the designs organised and get money,” he said. “There will be things to overcome which will cause inconvenience to the people of Henley but there will be no heavy goods vehicles coming over the bridge and going up Fair Mile.”
