2014 Regatta for the Disabled launched
Published 01/04/14

THE fifth annual Regatta for the Disabled in Henley will take place this summer.

The event was launched by Henley Mayor Stefan Gawrysiak and Tim Stevenson, Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, at a party for invited guests at Phyllis Court Club.

The yearís regatta will take place on Saturday, August 30 and will feature dragon boat races, a petting zoo, climbing wall, adaptive games, live music, craft stands and face painting. New for this year will be two boats provided by Boatability, a charity run by the Rivertime Boat Trust and Bisham Abbey Sailing and Navigation School, near Marlow. The boats will allow visitors in wheelchairs to enjoy trips on the river and have a go at paddling and steering.

Ian Tritton, chairman of the organising committee, said: “This is our fifth year and our aim hasnít changed: to offer river and riverbank activities to less able-bodied people that they can do with friends, families, groups or clubs.”

Mr Stevenson thanked the sponsors, trustees and organisers of the regatta, which he said was going from strength to strength.

He said: “The pleasure and sense of freedom it gives to disabled people must be really remarkable. I would like to extend my personal thanks to all of you who make this the great event that it is.”

Cllr Gawrysiak said: “Thank you to Ian and the committee for doing it. I know it is appreciated and I also know it is an awful lot of hard work.”

The regatta will take place in the Phyllis Court Club paddock, off Marlow Road, from 10am to 4pm. Tickets cost £4 and carers enter attend free. For more information, visit www.regattaforthedisabled.org
