Funeral for former Henley mayor Tony Lane
Published 01/04/14

EIGHTY mourners attended the funeral service of former Henley mayor Tony Lane today.

The cobbler, who lived at the Acacia Lodge care home in Quebec Road, died last month at Royal Berkshire Hospital. He was 87.

As one of his last wishes, his coffin was paraded through the town in a carriage drawn by four horses.

The cortege left funeral directors A B Walker & Son in Reading Road at about 11.20am before travelling along Duke Street to Market Place, then along King’s Road, Baronsmead, Bell Street, New Street and Thames Side North to St Mary’s Church in Hart Street.

The service was conducted by the Rev Canon Martyn Griffiths, who gave a welcome and opening prayer.

Mr Lane was a Conservative member of Henley Town Council between 1965 and 2002 and mayor for a record four terms between 1971 and 2002.

Henley mayor Stefan Gawrysiak said: “On behalf of the residents of Henley, the town of Henley and Henley Town Council, we all recognise Tony’s achievements.

“He was mayor four times, served on the council for 37 years and was awarded an MBE for his service to this wonderful community.

“I met him on several occasions and various functions at the town hall and he was always engaging and wanted to talk about Henley.

“Tony, you will be remembered and we can all thank you for your level of service to the town of Henley-on-Thames.”
