MARTIN AKEHURST has been named mayor elect for Henley in 2014/15.
He was nominated by Dieter Hinke, a fellow Henley Residents' Group councillor, at a meeting of the town council last night.
There were no other nominations and Cllr Akehurst, who is currently deputy mayor, was elected unanimously.
Councillors Jeni Wood (HRG) defeated Conservative Lorraine Hillier in the vote for deputy mayor elect.
Cllr Akehurst, a part-time actor, said he was “absolutely delighted” with his election and was looking forward to “giving something back” to Henley.
He added: “When I came back after the recent cancer scare I got a round of applause from councillors and members of the public - I was almost moved to tears. I’ve had tremendous support from councillors and the public.”
The annual mayor making ceremony will be held at the town hall on Monday, May 12 at 11.30am.
