Trader vows to fight prosecution
Published 26/04/14

A SHOPKEEPER who is being prosecuted for refusing to pay more than £1,200 in business rates has vowed to fight the case.

Georgina Henderson, who runs Foam Fashion in Hart Street, Henley, claims she should not have to pay full rates due to disruptive building work outside her store.

Last week, the Henley Standard reported that Ms Henderson had received a court summons for failing to make two payments of £601 earlier this year.

However, when she appeared at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, the case was adjourned.

Ms Henderson, who has run the shop since 2006, says she will refuse to pay business rates while two houses are being built in the courtyard behind her store. She says her takings have fallen drastically since the work began in March last year when three parking spaces outside the shop were fenced off and a skip placed there to take the builders’ rubble.

Ms Henderson, 51, of Duke Street, Henley, said an officer from South Oxfordshire District Council had offered to arrange a payment plan for her but she refused.

She said: “I’m not paying them in full while the skip is still outside. By the time of the next hearing I will have had a another bill for my business rates, which I won’t be able to pay and don’t think I should have to. I’m going to fight this all the way.”

The houses are being built by Henley developer Court Park Properties for River 88.
