Goring and Streatley Regatta cancelled

GORING and Streatley Regatta has been cancelled.

The annual event was due to take place in July but organisers say the site is still waterlogged after the winter floods and may not have dried out sufficiently by the summer.

In a statement, Goring Gap Boat Club said it had made the decision after “careful consideration” and looked forward to staging the regatta again in 2015.

It said: “The regatta site is still waterlogged and in the event of any more significant rainfall in the next three months a later cancellation would be inevitable.

“It makes sense to cancel now, minimising disruption and giving the water meadow a chance to recover and be in good shape for the 2015 regatta.

“By the time the regatta returns the club’s permanent base in Lower Basildon should be close to becoming a reality.

“This has been a long-held ambition for the club and will provide a new focus for our rowing activities nearer to Streatley and Goring.”

The club said the 2015 regatta would be “a major village event” and it would be asking other organisations in the village to co-host the event.
