Vintage Weekend attracts the crowds
Published 20/05/14

THOUSANDS of people attended the second Fawley Hill Steam and Vintage Weekend.

The event was organised by Sir William McAlpine and Lady McAlpine to celebrate her 70th birthday.

Celebrations kicked off with Rock on the Hill on Friday night where BBC Radio Berkshire DJ Mike Read and award-winning Elvis tribute act Ben Portsmouth were among the performers.

A two-day extravaganza of vintage vehicles followed on Saturday and Sunday.

Planes on display included Hurricanes, Spitfire, Red Arrows and nine Tiger Moths.

Machinery ranged from stationary engines to traction engines, horse-drawn ploughs, ploughing engines and JCBs.

There were steam rollers, lawn mowers, motorbikes, buses, vans, lorries, scooters, bicycles, fire engines, a steam bus, boats and an array of military vehicles including tanks.

There was also steam-driven fairground rides, many of which were over 100 years old.

Money raised at the weekend will be donated to charities and conservation groups.

Last year’s event attracted 12,500 over the three days and raised more than £150,000 for local organisations.
