Theresa May MP supports girls football club
Published 26/05/14

HOME SECRETARY Theresa May visited a Wargrave football club on Saturday to hand out the end of season awards.

The Maidenhead MP is president of Wargrave Girls FC and presented prizes to the club’s top players at a ceremony at the recreation ground in Recreation Road.

She gave out more than 30 awards to members of the club, which has 10 teams aged between senior and under sevens.

Among those honoured at the awards were ladies’ team player of the year Tessa Brown, overall top goalscorer Bella Hobbs and club personalities of the year Anne Malone and Nadine Doble.

Each team had a trophy for its player of the year, player’s player and most improved player, while there were additional prizes in some age groups including a long service award and referee’s player of the year.

Every player in the under nine and under sevens and eights squads also received a certificate and medal.

After presenting the awards, Mrs May congratulated the club for a successful year which saw it attract 16 new players and develop facilities such as the new pitches on Kings Field, the match day café and a proposed training pitch at The Piggott School.

She also made special mention to the under 10 and under 14 teams, who both won their leagues’ cup competitions this season.

Mrs May said: “Congratulations to all the girls that have won awards. You have all done a wonderful job and it’s great to be back here. I think it’s really important to promote football for girls. It is obviously good for them, gives them exercise and they are outdoors and also learning to work in a team.

“It’s very good to hear what fantastic success the teams have had and how much enjoyment you get out of playing football. Don’t ever let anybody say anything against girls playing football.”
