Site purchased for new school in Caversham
Published 06/06/14

A NEW primary school in Caversham has announced the location of its permanent home.

The Heights Primary School, which is to open at a temporary site in Gosbrook Road in September, will be built in Upper Warren Avenue, close to the 25-acre Mapledurham playing fields.

The site, called Highridge, has been purchased on behalf the free school by the Education Funding Agency.

The school, which will serve Caversham Heights and Mapledurham, is expected to open there in September 2016.

The trustees of the free school had looked at 40 public and privately owned sites before choosing Highridge.

Head teacher Karen Edwards said: “I’m really excited that the agency has been able to secure such a fantastic site so close to the heart of our catchment area. “Caversham Heights has missed out for so many years. This year alone Caversham would have had to find an extra 94 school places, so this couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Our proximity to so many fabulous outdoor facilities gives us the potential to create a school that will offer our children a really stimulating curriculum.”

Daniel Pagella, lead member of the school trust, said “Finding a site large enough for a school with access to outdoor facilities has felt like a near impossible task so we’re delighted.

“Developing a primary school in an established residential area is a very challenging process but we’re looking forward to working with our neighbours and the wider community to minimise any disruption and make it a facility we can all feel proud of.”

The school is a conventional two-form entry primary which will open with two classes of 25 children in reception and year one.

In April it agreed terms with Reading Borough Council to use the former Caversham Nursery in Gosbrook Road for up to two years.

These buildings, alongside Westfield Road Recreation Ground and opposite Christchurch Meadows, are being refurbished after being badly damaged in a fire last year.
