Concert for Festival featuring Georgie Fame
Published 20/06/14

A JAZZ trio played a concert in Goring to promote this year’s inaugural Goring and Streatley Festival.

Simon Mayor, Richard Collins and Hilary James, who perform as Slim Panatella and the Mellow Virginians, played swing tunes to more than 80 people at the village hall.

Ms James also sang traditional French and English songs with her sister Janet.

Andy Baum, who lives in Goring, joined the musicians on stage for several numbers, playing guitar and mandolin and singing.

The festival will begin next Friday (June 27) and runs until July 6. Almost 50 music, drama, comedy, sports and arts events will take place at 19 venues.

At the weekend, volunteers decorated the village in readiness. They hung 14 flags bearing the festival logo in High Street and a further seven on lampposts along the bridge. They also erected three flag poles in Rectory Gardens and decorated each venue with bunting.

The programme includes a mix of local performers and well-known names. On July 4, Sixties singer Georgie Fame will be performing two consecutive concerts at Goring village hall. The show has sold out but organisers have arranged for it be shown live on a big screen in Rectory Gardens and visitors will be able to hire headphones to hear the music.

Tickets are still available for an audience with former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion on June 30, which will be followed by a literary quiz between Goring and Streatley. Other performers include jazz trumpeter Denny Ilett, the Ruisi String Quartet and Goring rock band The Lightyears.

Young musicians from both villages took part in a warm-up event at the Morrell Rooms in Streatley last Saturday. Professional examiners offered feedback and the best performers will be invited to take part in a concert at St Thomas’ Church in Goring on June 28.

Festival organiser Ron Bridle said: “The Slim Panatella concert was an absolutely lovely evening and a great curtain-raiser for what’s to come. We’ve had a lot of support from the community and tickets are selling very well.

“Hopefully, we’ll get another boost now we’ve put up the decoration.”
