WWI memorial lunch raises £1,000 for appeal
Published 20/08/14

A LUNCH to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War was held at Shiplake Memorial Hall on Saturday.

More than 80 people attended the event, which was organised by the Shiplake branch of the Royal British Legion, including branch chairman Roger Head and chaplain Michael Seymour Jones. The guests were served cottage pie and then apple pie, all made by members of the branch.

Amateur historian Mike Willoughby, from Woodcote, gave a talk about his new book, Bringing Them Home, which is about local soldiers who died in the conflict, and there were readings of war poems and letters written by servicemen by members of Shiplake and Dunsden Dramatic Organisation and the Legion.

The event finished with a performance by Shiplake Community Choir, who led the diners in a singalong with numbers including Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory. Rosemary Jones, branch secretary and treasurer, said: “It all went extremely well. We had some wonderful comments and feedback about the event.”

About £1,000 was raised through ticket sales and a raffle, all of which will go to this year’s Poppy Appeal.
