A student from Shiplake will perform a 24-hour-long webchat to raise money for UNICEF.
Myles Dyer will be broadcasting live in a video chat on the social networking site www.stickam.com. Anyone from around the world can access the site and speak directly to Myles throughout the 24 hour period. Viewers will be able to make donations to UNICEF on the site.
“I have done this over the last two years. The first year, I raised £500; the second year I made £3,500, and this year I am aiming for £10,000,” said Myles, who is travelling to Stickam’s headquarters in Los Angeles for the special broadcast.
Between Myles giving information on UNICEF and interacting live with people across the world, ‘Stickaid 2008’ will feature a host of fund-raising competitions and games.
“I do requests. For example, last year I said I would be slapped in the face with a fish if we reached a certain target. It’s just a fun way to give someone a bit of an incentive to donate,” said Myles.
He added that the forthcoming event is a good example of the power of the internet, especially social networking sites.
“Last year all that charity money was raised by people who had never met each other in real life. Without the net they would have never come together in the same way and done this for a great charity,” he said.
“The previous times that I did it were really hard. I was completely exhausted and when it finished I just shut down.”
Myles’ fundraising page is already online and can be accessed on www.justgiving.com/stickaid2008.
