DESPITE downpours, residents of Remenham turned out for the summer fete on Saturday.
Special guest Theresa May, MP for Maidenhead, unveiled a plaque commemorating the completion of the parish hall’s £100,000 refurbishment.
Mrs. May said: “It’s great to see the village hall looking so good in its refurbished state and it’s fantastic that all of the money has been raised by residents of the area.”
Remenham parish councillor Peter Sly said the fete raised an additional £1,200 towards the hall and its maintenance.
He said: “The hall needed refurbishment and we spent more than £100,000 on new toilets and a new kitchen but the hall itself has kept its original village character.”
“The fete was important as we need money for the hall and need to encourage people to visit us and use the hall for meetings and functions. We had a good day despite getting a bit rained on.”
The hall was built in 1913 and donated to the parishioners by Viscount Hambleden. During the Second World War it was used as classrooms for children from Battersea, some of whom still return to the area.
The Henley and District branch of the National Childbirth Trust held a highly successful autumn gift fair in the Christ Church Centre on Saturday.
There were a number of stalls selling unique crafts, including personalised pram plates, wooden toys, books and cards, kitchen and beauty products, international music, ladies’ and children’s clothing, home wares, hand-made pictures and hand-made jewellery.
The children were entertained with hand and foot prints and there was a ‘decorate the gingerbread’ table — although many little ones enjoyed just eating them!
Social events co-ordinator for the NCT, Charlotte Miles-Kingston, said: “Although the weather was disappointing, everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and over £500 was raised from the sale for the charity, which is a really worthwhile organisation supporting parents through pregnancy, childbirth and the children’s early years.
“We are really grateful to everyone who supported the event and particularly those who ran the refreshments and to Cook Shop in Henley for kindly donating some delicious cakes. The Christ Church Centre was very helpful as always and we thank them for all their ongoing support of the NCT.”
