MAGICIAN Paul Daniels had some wise words for pupils at the Piggott School in Wargrave.
Mr Daniels, who lives in Shiplake, said: “Don’t copy anyone else, you are the best one of you there is. Be yourself and exaggerate yourself slightly.”
He was guest speaker at the school’s GCSE presentation evening.
Headteacher Hilary Winter said: “Not only did Mr Daniels give an entertaining speech, he also offered words of encouragement and praise to each of the students as he presented them with their certificates.
“This is a wonderful empowerment for students about to embark on their future career pathways.”
The magician rounded off the evening with some card tricks. Another guest of honour was Peter Gough, department manager of the Waitrose food store in Twyford, which supports business studies at the school.
Meanwhile, Piggott pupils took part in National Tree Planting Week by planting five trees in place of those destroyed in summer storms last year.
Members of the school’s ecology group were helped by Wokingham Borough Council’s tree and landscape team to apply for funding from the National Tree Council.
The pupils chose two native trees, an oak and silver birch, for the back of the school and two non-native sweet gums to provide a splash of colour in a built-up area of the school.
The fifth was an oriental plane tree, which was chosen to commemorate the group’s work.
The group was helped with the planting by teacher Jean Wilson and Sarah Duckworth and Lee Garner from the council’s tree team.
