SONNING COMMON VILLAGE lost their unbeaten record on Sunday when they crashed to a seven wicket defeat WHITCHURCH.
The visitors batted first and coped well with the opening overs. Howard Cook led the way, anchoring the innings with a fine 36, well supported by Nick Pitson and Steve McGrath.
McGrath looked to have found his form and struck some well timed boundaries. A couple of run outs caused some lost momentum. Skipper Chris Pitson with some lusty blows and Alex Welch with some deft touches pushed on and veterans Keith Davies and Duncan Mee added some valuable runs as Sonning Common finished on 156.
In reply the visitors picked up a couple of quick wickets and looked to be forcing the issue. An excellent opening spell by Gareth Kirkwood put Whitchurch on the back foot early on.
Sonning Common struggled in the heat and soon Leach and Rider were scoring freely. Youngster Luke Pitson led the way with some excellent fielding as did Keith Davies and Stuart Mee. Alex Welch, Paul Barker and Nick Pitson bowled well but the Whitchurch batsmen were never in any trouble.
Sonning Common stemmed the run flow towards the end but Whitchurch passed the visitors total with an over to spare.
