A WOMAN from Whitchurch Hill is a member of the first ever female crew to row across the Indian Ocean.
Sarah Duff, 26, and her crew-mates Fiona Waller, 24, Jo Jackson, 28, and Elin Haf Davies, 32, were the only all female team to complete the Indian Ocean Rowing Days race.
Their team, Ocean Angels, rowed for 79 days after setting off from Geraldton, Western Australia, on April 19 and they reached their destination, Mauritius in second place. The race was won by an all-male four from Bexhill in 62 days.
The girls had to be totally self sufficient on their 29 foot rowing boat, rowing in pairs for two hours and resting for two hours all day every day.
They ate dehydrated rations and made their water using a solar-powered de-salinator while dealing with problems like breakages, power loss, flooding and steering issues and extreme weather conditions.
The girls are planning a huge wall of faces at the fund-raising celebration they are hosting in October when they get back. Go to http://www2.faceboat.org/ to provide a picture and donation.
The team is hoping to raise £50,000 for breast Cancer Care. To make a donation visit www.justgiving.com/oceanangels. For more information on the team, visit www.oceanangels.com
