MARY JOAN IRENE HOWARD died peacefully at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, aged 85, after fighting a long battle with several disabilities.
Joan was born in Palestine where her father was a colonial official. After attending school in Jerusalem, she was sent to a boarding school in Somerset in 1939.
At the same time her mother and younger brother returned and settled in Weston-super-Mare. It was there that Joan met John, who was to become her husband. In 1969, John left the army and the couple settled in Henley where their two children, Caroline and Richard, went to school.
Joan was a volunteer for the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Families Association and a major contributor to the activities of the Henley Archaeological Group, including being its membership secretary until ill-health forced her to stand down two years ago. She was very supportive of the Henley Royal Regatta and of her husband’s role as a Steward. Joan loved Henley and often frequented the local shops and cafés.
She will be greatly missed by all her family, in particular her grandchildren, Natasha, Harry and Oliver.
The funeral will be at Reading Crematorium on Tuesday at 1.45pm. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to Age Concern or the British Heart Foundation via Tomalin & Son, 38 Reading Road, Henley, RG9 1AG.
