New Thames island "claimed" by Mike Read
Published 23/04/14

MIKE READ marked St George’s Day by “claiming” an island in the River Thames in Henley.

The BBC Berkshire radio presenter and his neighbour Alan Pontin rowed into the river from their homes in Mill Lane to plant a Red Ensign, a British naval flag, and two St George’s Crosses.

Read, 67, said he first noticed the island had formed last month.

He said: “Because of the work on the weir upstream and the floods in February I think sediment has built up. At one point the island was above water. We thought it would be nice if on St George’s Day we could claim it for the country and young Prince George.”

Ted Brett and Dave Cheesbrough, who work for Mr Pontin, a property developer, held guide ropes in place while the pair climbed on to the mound and christened it “Prince George Island”.

Read said: “It was our Captain Cook moment.”
