FOR the first time in 60 years our town’s former magistrates’ court has become a private residence — or rather seven residences, writes Lucy Boon.
The main house — a lovely Grade II-listed property in Northfield End that is the mirror image of its neighbour Northlea House — contains three apartments, all of which have separate front doors that are accessible via the grand original entrance porch.
While at the back of the building, the courthouse’s 20th century extension has been magically reworked into two wonderful two-bedroom apartments over two floors, with upside-down-living — that is to say, the kitchen/living room is upstairs — to make the most of the views over the distant Fawley hills.
The landlords bought the three-storey red brick premises from Oxfordshire County Council in 2000 for use as their office, but when their business relocated elsewhere and they couldn’t find a willing commercial tenant to replace it they applied for change of use from the local council.
Each flat comes with two parking places, but the hope is that there may be even more parking for guests once the outside has been completed. Prices range from £1,100 per calendar month for a one-bedroom flat with bathroom and kitchen/living room (flat number one) through to £1,700 per calendar month for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom flat with separate kitchen and a huge living room (flat number three).
