Charming 18th century business opportunity?

by Jacky Hayler

A UNIQUE chance to run a bed and breakfast business has come up in Henley town centre.

Sydney House, formerly the Sydney House Hotel, is a beautiful example of a double-fronted period property dating from the 18th century with earlier timber framing to the rear, believed to date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The property has just become available for sale for a guide of £1.595 million through Savills, in Henley.

Katie Baldwin, an associate director at Savills who is handling the sale, said: “Although Sydney House has been used most recently as a private home, the versatility of its layout means it could quite easily (subject to any relevant permissions) be utilised as a bed and breakfast.

“Indeed its central location, combined with its terrace garden, would very much lend itself to this type of business.

“Alternatively, the upper floor — with its own kitchenette and separate access — could easily be let out as an apartment providing a prospective purchaser with a form of additional income.”
