Rotary Club of Henley Bridge

ON Wednesday, April 7, club member Geoff Thomas talked about his amazing journey from Shiplake to Beijing with three friends last summer.

They travelled via Moscow on the Trans-Siberian and Trans-Mongolian railways.

Setting out from Shiplake station on July 17, they arrived in Beijing on time 13 days later, having travelled through seven countries, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia and China.

The journey was over 12,000km, one third of the way around the world.

They had stopovers in Moscow, where they visited Red Square and toured the magnificent Metro system, and Yekaterinburg in Western Siberia, where they visited the site of the murder of the Czar and his family in 1917 and viewed the remains of the U2 spy plane piloted by Gary Powers which was shot down during the Cold War.
