FOURTEEN Leander athletes have been selected among the GB team for the World U23 Championships in Rotterdam, where racing gets underway this weekend for eight days of competition.

The event combines the world junior and U23 regattas, along with the senior non-Olympic boat classes, and will include more than 2,500 athletes racing on the Willem Alexander Baan to the north-east of the city centre.

Leander’s Harry Leask and Andrew Joel continue in the men’s quad for a second successive year, joined this time by their clubmates Harry Glenister and 2014 world junior medallist Rowan Law. The crew survives unchanged from the line-up which won the Queen Mother Cup at Henley six weeks ago.

Jess Leyden, women’s sculling champion at the 2013 World Juniors, will team up in the women’s double with Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne, of Reading University.

Another rower with senior experience is Leander’s Sam Mottram, who won silver in lightweight men’s quads last year and will this year contest the lightweight single.

Leander’s Ed Fisher and Jonathan Jackson team up with Benjamin Reeves and Alastair Douglass for the lightweight men’s four for a second successive year and will be looking step up a notch having won bronze in 2015.

More Leander athletes race in the GB men’s eight and four, while Tom Barras, who has been part of the quad for the past couple of years, has been the top U23 sculler this season and goes in the men’s single.
