Henley’s junior boys’ crews secure double success at small boats head of river race

HENLEY’S 20-strong J15 to J18 men’s squad secured two out right wins at Reading Small

HENLEY’S 20-strong J15 to J18 men’s squad secured two out right wins at Reading Small Boats Head on Saturday.

There was a number of promising performances over the 3.7km course where the J16 4x- crew of Connor Brown, Joe Sidgwick, Oliver Taylor and Balthazar Issa had to battle not only the other crews, but a deluge of torrential rain, thunder and hail. The crew, that had not had an outing in its race line-up before, won by 10 seconds.

Henley’s other success was in J15 4x+ with a large field of 21 crews drawn from many of the top rowing schools and clubs including Sir William Borlase, St Pauls’, Hampton and Wallingford.

The Henley crew of Alex Carr, Euan Turnell, Grant Taylor, James Swinburn with cox James Penrose sculled with power and commitment to win by 33 seconds in a time of 13 minutes, seven seconds. This made it one of the fastest times of the day across all age groups.

Speaking of the wins, Henley’s chief junior boys coach Tony Bailes said: “This great set of wins will be a huge boost ahead of the hard winter training that is needed for success in next summer’s regattas.”
