Upper Thames’ ladies lead way at Vets Head

Upper Thames’ ladies lead way at Vets Head
UPPER THAMES triumphed at the Veteran Head of the River Race on Sunday.

The club’s veteran D (average age 50) won the pennant in their event in an exceptionally fast time of 13 minutes, 29 seconds.

The crew of Guin Batten, Miriam Luke, Louise Wymer, Anna Van Leemputten, Helen Mangan, Jo Wilby, Judith Burne, Jenny Page and cox Di Yarrow finished sixth overall, beating a huge number of men’s crews in the process.

Despite some confusion about the effect that the erratic tides may have played, the crew had their best row ever and were only beaten by one other veteran boat, an A category crew whose average age was just 27.

Speaking after the race a delighted Luke said: “It was an exciting race with crews strategically positioned every 500 metres to keep us pulling really hard. We had a great cox who followed our race plan to the letter and kept us all informed of the nearby crews.”
