Club begins anniversary year with hat-trick of victories

A ROWING club has launched its 175th anniversary celebrations by presenting gold medals to teenagers who were victorious in the Schools Head of the River Race.

The girls from Henley Rowing Club achieved three wins out of three at the event on the Thames in London last month — the women’s J15 eights category, the women’s J17 quad and the women’s junior coxed four. Club captain Nick Mead said: “The results we have seen this season are testament to the commitment that the girls and their coaches have put in over many years.

“Rowing is a sport that demands an uncompromising attitude to training and technique and this is a wonderful accolade for the whole club.”

In June, as part of its anniversary celebrations, the club is planning to have 175 rowers on the royla regatta course in a variety of boats.

On its anniversary weekend, starting on Friday, September 5, a ball will be held at Phyllis Court Club followed by a party at the rowing club in Wargrave Road the following day when there will be eights racing and a barbecue.
