Leander duo help GB edge past Germans to win World Cup gold

THE Great Britain men’s quadruple scull secured their first-ever gold medal at the World Cup regatta in France.

The GB team once again topped the medal table with six golds, four silvers and three bronze.

Leander’s Pete Lambert and Charles Cousins, with Sam Townsend of Reading University and Graeme Thomas of Agecroft, are unchanged from the line-up which took bronze at last year’s world championships.

Together they got off to a solid start behind the German Olympic champions and by halfway the British boat had narrowed the Germans’ lead, before pushing past to win by almost a length.

Speaking after the race, Lambert said: “We could hear that they were having to work hard to stay in front and that gave us confidence that we could do it.”
