Losing finalists aim for better in Thames Cup

UPPER THAMES will boat eight crews at this year’s Henley Royal Regatta consisting of 36 athletes.

The men’s eight, who lost out in the final of the Thames Cup last year, will challenge again this time with most of the same crew.

Under the guidance of coach Ian Desmond, the crew have gone from strength to strength, beating fastest schoolboys Abingdon School two weeks ago.

Director of rowing Justin Sutherland said: “After the disappointment of last year’s final, where we under-performed at a crucial moment, we have spent a lot of time talking about how important the small details are this year. Our results so far have been very encouraging and there is a great spirit at the club these days.

“The last 10 months have flown by and we are all excited about our prospects.” The club will boat two crews in the Britannia Cup for coxed fours.
