New silverware for 175th royal regatta

THIS year the Regatta will be celebrating its 175th anniversary and the stewards are delighted to announce that two new pieces of silverware are to be presented for the first time.

There is a new base for the Grand Challenge Cup and a new trophy, the Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup, for junior women’s quadruple sculls.

The Grand Challenge Cup was first presented at the inaugural regatta in 1839.

The original base was added in 1896 and extended twice — in 1954 and 1986.

Two years ago it was recognised that the base was running out of space for the names of the winning crews and it was decided to commission a completely new base with enough space to take the regatta through the next 140 years.
