Walton and Collins set sights on medal place at World Championships
THE GB team announced for next month’s World Championships in Amsterdam is virtually unchanged following the success of last weekend’s World Cup regatta in Lucerne, writes Robert Treharne Jones.
But alongside the established favourites Amsterdam marks a step on for relative newcomers to the senior squad.
They include the all-Leander line-up in the men’s heavyweight double scull, in which Jonny Walton and John Collins narrowly missed a medal on Sunday, as well as the lightweight double, where Jamie Kirkwood and Will Fletcher are making their mark on this most competitive boat class.
Twickenham-born Collins originally took up rowing because his father thought it might be a good sport to try in his quest for his Duke of Edinburgh Award, and has since become a three-times Henley winner.
Walton has competed at three U23 World Championships, one more than his crew mate, with whom he has forged a strong partnership this year. Getting the season under way with an A final place at the European Championships, where they finished in sixth place, they edged up a notch in Aiguebelette, finishing fifth. But last weekend the double, coached by Mark Banks, ran out of steam approaching the finish where they came fourth.
