THREE Leander athletes returned with medals from last weekend’s World U23 Rowing Championships, staged on Lake Varese, Italy, writes Robert Treharne Jones.
They included silver for Morgan Baynham-Williams, cox of the GB women’s eight, while Jack Beaumont and Angus Groom earned bronze medals after finishing third in the men’s double sculls.
Baynham-Williams, who had coxed the Leander Ladies’ Plate eight to the final three weeks earlier, retained her seat in the crew in which she had also won silver at the 2013 championships.
The USA held the lead throughout the racing as GB, Germany and Australia battled it out for silver and bronze. GB were well placed in third at 500 metres and moved past Australia into a clear second place, retaining this position all the way through to the finish line and holding off their German and Australian rivals.
Speaking after the race Baynham-Williams said: “We’re really pleased with our silver medal — it was a very intense race and we delivered our best out there. I couldn’t have asked for any more from the girls.”
