Upper Thames eights pull together to win at Quintin head of river

FOUR Upper Thames crews raced at the Quintin Head last weekend, winning two pennants.

The men’s first eight saw off stiff competition from London, Molesey and the Tideway Scullers B crew to take the senior prize over the 4,500 metre course between Hammersmith and Chiswick bridges.

The second boat demonstrated the club’s strength in depth, placing eight overall out of 200 boats with the third eight coming 25th.

A veterans’ Masters D crew also triumphed, beating a Quintin crew that had been the fastest Masters E eight at the World Masters Championships in Vienna two years ago.

The crew consisted of Pete McConnell, Graham Lloyd, Zad Rogers, Gareth Morris, John Ewans, Alex Jessel, Mike Jennings and Pete Jacobs and were coxed by Julia Hedley, a Tideway specialist who normally coxes at Vesta RC in Putney.

The next race outing for Upper Thames crews will be the Henley Fours and Eights Head on February 16.
