Upper Thames eight clock up fastest time of the day

THREE Upper Thames crews triumphed at last Sunday’s Abingdon Head.

The masters D crew beat their nearest opponents by almost a minute. They were also the fastest crew of the day out of the 320 who completed the course. The crew consisted of Dan Sadler, Graham Lloyd, Zad Rogers, Gareth Morris, John Ewans, Alex Jessel, Mike Jennings and Pete Jacobs and were coxed by Sally Lawrence of Lea Rowing Club.

Despite their winning margin the row was not uneventful. The course has a sharp bend in it and the combination of a roaring tailwind and a small rudder meant that they did not navigate the corner and had to stop rowing to get round it.

Upper Thames’ Masters G crew of Bill Evans, Mike Dudley, Tony Rose, Peter Taylor and cox Tony Piglet triumphed in the coxed fours event. A Masters C four also triumphed.

Upper Thames juniors also entered crews and were unfortunate not to win silverware as they came away with three second place finishes.
