Shiplake crews impress

SHIPLAKE COLLEGE’S top crews put in good performances at Wallingford Regatta.

SHIPLAKE COLLEGE’S top crews put in good performances at Wallingford Regatta.

The first eight raced in both J18 A eights and IM2 eights. In J18 A eights with only six entries a straight final was their first race and this saw them leading up to the 1,000m marker but in the second half of the race they were rowed through by King’s Chester and King’s College Wimbledon.

In their second event they put in another strong performance and after a hotly contested heat they qualified into the final beating Eton 2nds and narrowly once again being beaten by King’s Chester. Shiplake had a tough race in the final and missed out on a top three place.

The Shiplake 2nd four qualified for the final out of the 23 crews that entered the IM3 event. In the final they finished just outside the medal places in fourth spot.

The girls’ double scull crew of Katy Ward and Maddie Newman raced in WJ18 2x again in a straight final and despite being last out of the blocks finished in fourth place.

The J15 eight qualified for the final but just lacked power to make any real impact.

Meanwhile the Oratory School Boat Club first eight finished second in their head, close behind Bedford School and comfortably beating Eton Colleges 3rd eight and several club crews.

Third position in the repechage was not quite good enough to make the final.
