AN Upper Thames men’s crew won their first ever event at the Ghent International Regatta in Belgium last weekend against a strong field from across Europe.
The victory for the coxed four follows on from a win the previous week at Wallingford regatta, and puts the club in a strong position in the build up to Henley Royal Regatta this July.
In the heats, the Upper Thames crew of Sam Barnes, Graham Hall, Luke Wootton and Jake Davidson and cox Laura Payne broke into clear water by 250 metres, finishing nine seconds clear of Tideway Scullers in second place.
In the final, a crew of Oxford Brookes alumni managed to hold on to the Upper Thames boat for a while. By halfway Upper Thames were well in command and finished four lengths ahead in a fast time of six minutes 26 seconds.
