HENLEY Rowing Club’s WJ16 quad had a good start to the new season with two wins at the Wallingford Long Distance Sculls on Saturday.
Racing doubles in the first division, Maddie Orr and Ellie Thompson put in a fast performance of 19 minutes, 20.1 seconds over the 4.25km course to take the doubles event. The doubles of Hattie Orr and Georgia Edwards, Emma Lister and Lauren Edwards came sixth and eighth respectively.
In the afternoon division, last year’s British Championship winning quad of Hattie Orr, Ellie Thompson, Maddie Orr and Lauren Edwards won easily in a time of 17 minutes, 44.3 seconds. This time also made them the second fastest junior women’s quad of the day, beating 11 older WJ18 quads, losing the top boat time to an older Shiplake College WJ18 quad by seven seconds. The quad finished 26th overall in a division of 219 boats.
Emma Lister raced in the WJ16 single sculls and after a fast start overtook a number of the big contingent from Lady Eleanor Holles School Boat Club to record a time of 22 minutes, 39.5 seconds.
Leon Redman, racing for the first time this season in the J18 single sculls event overcame a difficult first 2km in a crowded field of rowers to record a time of 18 minutes, 58 seconds.
Janet Dutton in the Women’s Masters E Category rowed the 4.25km course to record a time of 23 minutes 39.1 seconds.
