A SIZABLE Upper Thames squad picked up three wins at the Masters World Championships held in Varese, Italy.

David Hope excelled by winning medals in the C and E single sculls and he then dropped into a D8 with Clive Cooper, Graham Lloyd and John Ewans from Upper Thames and four Monmouth Rowing Club oarsmen to win their event despite having rowed together only once before.

There were a number of other good races and several second place finishes. Jeremy Dobbin finished second on his first visit to the Championships in the F single sculls while a relatively novice Upper Thames women’s quad raced hard in both C and D events.

Graham Lloyd and John Ewans also had a good race in E quads rowing with Tiff Woods, a USA multiple Olympian. However, the crew had steering problems which meant they hit a buoy, lost a blade, and lost out on a certain win.

l Due to a production error, this story was omitted from last week’s Henley Standard.
