Shiplake College pick up eight wins at Worcester

THE Shiplake College Boat Club has made a good start to the autumn season of racing.

THE Shiplake College Boat Club has made a good start to the autumn season of racing.

At the Wallingford Long Distance Regatta it was the ever increasing girls’ squad that showed its potential with wins in both WJ18 2x for Maddie Newman and Katy Ward who were then joined for another victory by Alice White and Anna Davies in WJ18 4x.

The boys picked up victory in the J15 quad where Christian Hjortland-Marks, Tommy Mottram, Cosmo Hearnden and Henry Blois Brooke won their event by 20 seconds.

Meanwhile Hugh Mackworth-Praed, the first eight coach, won the elite singles.

Travelling to the Worcester Small Boats Head on Sunday the Shiplake squad returned with eight victories over the 4,500 metre course.

Max Hearnden and Henry Cawthorne triumphed in the J18 pair in Division 1 while there were further victories in this division for a J16 coxed four of Oli Gerrard, Will Carey, Scott Parker, Cam Hance with Vikings’ Belle Narracott as cox. Seb Newman followed up his singles victory at Wallingford by joining with Cosmo Hearnden to take the J15 doubles on the River Severn.

Katy Ward and Maddie Newman showed the strength of the girls’ squad while Harry Hogan, Green, Albert Rydevik, Gus McCulloch with cox Dom Marsh triumphed in the novice 4+ while Carey and Parker took the first place in the J16 2x. Tommy Mottram and Hugo Oglina won first and second places respectively in the J15 single sculls.

Speaking after the racing, Shiplake’s head of boats, Tom Crisford said: “I can not remember the last time we had eight victories at a rowing event, and with other crews also doing well at Worcester this is one of the most successful starts we have had since I joined.”
