A RECORD number of almost 30 Shiplake College Boat Club athletes had a successful day at Saturday’s Pangbourne Head.

In Division 1 the best result was the J18 coxed four with Harry Vardigans, Max Hearnden, Harry Hogan, Thomas Arnold and Dom Marsh winning their event by five seconds beating crews from Eton College, Bedford School and St Edward’s amongst others.

Encouraging results were also achieved in the J16 quad from Carey, Parker Brown and Gerrard and the J16 double of Hance and Pollard with both these crews finishing third in their events.

In Division 2 all Shiplake athletes raced in single sculls with Harry Vardigans finishing third out of a field of 27. Harry Hogan finished third in the J18 B event.

Henry Cawthorne achieved the highest finishing position of sixth out of 44 boats in the J17 single sculls while Scott Parker came fifth out of 25 boats in the J16 single sculls.

In the girls’ section Alice White and Katy Ward finished third and fourth respectively in the WJ18 single sculls.

Speaking after the races, Shiplake’s head of boats, Tom Crisford, said: “Whilst it is pleasing to see such a strong set of results it is also fantastic to see so many Shiplake athletes competing particularly in single sculls.

“Special mention should go to boys in the J16 squad such as Josh Cuffe, Matt Brown and Cam Hance for competing so well when still relatively inexperienced in smaller boats.”
