Henley juniors triumph in women’s novice coxed fours

HENLEY Rowing Club’s senior and junior women won five events at the Wallingford Head of the River race on Sunday.

HENLEY Rowing Club’s senior and junior women won five events at the Wallingford Head of the River race on Sunday.

Racing over the 4.5km course, the women’s elite eight achieved their first win of the season with a commanding performance. In their first competitive outing this season, the women started quickly and maintained their pace to complete the course in a winning time of 16 minutes, 43 seconds.

With entries in six events, the Henley junior women’s squad used this head race to compete against senior women in a variety of categories.

The WJ15 eight competed against a strong field and having started at the back of the pack had a great race to finish in second place, losing the top spot by just four seconds after marshalling their way through a number of wayward crews.

Following their win at the Fours Head the previous weekend, the WJ17 coxed four of Alexis Perkins, Kryssie Steiger, Ciara Buckley, Emily Pimlott and cox Rebecca Lister, raced in the adult Intermediate 3 category and repeated their strong performance to take the win convincingly. The WJ16 girls of Hattie Orr, Ellie Thompson, Maddie Orr and Lauren Edwards, unbeaten as a sculling quad this season, moved into the coxed four boat with cox Emma Lister for this event and won easily in a time of 18 minutes, 37 seconds, making them the fastest junior women’s four of the day. The fourth win for Henley came from the WJ15 coxed four of Katie Beale, Clare Pearson, Alicia Redman and Anna Roe, soon followed by the fifth win of the day from the coxed novice four of Emma Lister, Hannah Gutteridge, Katy Claridge, Lauren Kay and cox Rebecca Lister. The WJ17 and WJ16 girls combined as an eight to row in the Intermediate 3 category for the first time and came fourth, eight seconds behind the winner in a strong field of 13 other university and senior women’s boats.
