TWO crews from Shiplake Vikings Rowing Club, containing two sets of twins, had a successful weekend as they won medals at the British Junior Championships held last weekend at Strathclyde Country Park near Glasgow.

The junior boys’ pair of Harry and Tom Berkley battled the strong winds to qualify straight through to the final of the junior men’s pair. Here they fought a tough race with Claires Court to take bronze behind Thames RC and Great Marlow School.

The junior girls’ crew made up of Ellie Thompson, Hattie Orr, Lauren Edwards and Maddie Orr, who still have another year in this age category, moved through to the finals with ease and led the field in the junior women’s coxless four to take gold by six seconds ahead of Weybridge and Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham.

After a quick stop where the girls’ coach and Viking boys hurriedly switched over the riggers on the Kanghua boat to convert it from a four to a quad, they set off again to battle it out over the 2km course against other main contenders who were a composite boat of Gloucester Hartpury and Reading GB start—up squads, Warrington RC and Durham RC.

Tired legs from their previous victory meant the Vikings had to settle for a silver medal in the junior women’s quad, closely behind the winners from Gloucester Hartpury and Reading.

Their victory in the coxless four qualifies them to represent England at the Home International Regatta this coming weekend in Scotland.
