Olympic gold medallist sets sights on return

LEANDER’S Anna Watkins is back in training with a view to making the Great Britain squad for next year’s Rio

LEANDER’S Anna Watkins is back in training with a view to making the Great Britain squad for next year’s Rio games.

Watkins has given birth to two children since she won Olympic gold in the double sculls with Katherine Grainger at the London 2012 games and only last year said she would not be making a return to the sport.

However, a change of heart has seen the 32-year-old, who also secured bronze at the Beijing games in 2008, return to the water where she has been training since April.

Speaking this week Watkins said: “I want to see what this old, clapped-out, two-babies body is capable of.

“I initially just wanted to get fit and feel like myself again but the lure of the Olympics was just too strong.”

Grainger is currently preparing for the world championships in Aiguebelette, France, where she is paired up with Leander’s Vicky Thornley.
