New 5km run idea

PLANS for a new weekly 5km run in Henley have been given a cautious welcome by the town council.

PLANS for a new weekly 5km run in Henley have been given a cautious welcome by the town council.

Parkrun is a worldwide running event that usually takes place on Saturday mornings and already exists in Maidenhead and Reading.

Athletes register online and have a unique number used to track their times which are uploaded to the Parkrun  website.

The council was approached by James Barr, a Parkrun member, who suggested Henley as a suitable venue using areas such as Gillotts Corner Field and Mill and Marsh Meadows.

The recreation and amenities committee has welcomed the idea but suggested Mr Barr finds more suitable areas.

Sam Evans, who chairs the committee, said the meadows were liable to flooding and Councillor Kellie Hinton said Gillotts Corner Field was a haven for butterflies and rare flowers.
