Scouts tackle cooking competition

MEMBERS of Henley 1st Friday scouts took part in a cooking competition in Cholsey with 1st Stoke Row scouts and 1st Goring scouts.

Each group was given a mystery bag of ingredients, including bread, tinned tomatoes, cream, chocolate, sweetcorn, chicken, wraps, carrots and a few extras.

There was also a bank of little “extras” that the groups shared to add a little spice to their menu. The groups were all given 15 minutes to plan a two-course menu for four people and then 90 minutes to prepare and cook the meal.

The Henley scouts’ menu comprised burritos/fajitas with onion, carrot, sweetcorn and chicken in a tomato and garlic sauce. Their dessert was chocolate-dipped fruit, with a chocolate fondant sauce.

Theirs was voted the tastiest food and they won bronze.

It was lovely to watch the
co-operation and teamwork within all the teams — all without any interference from the adults who were supervising.

The Henley scouts were Ailish James, James Dunning, William Lawrence, Elio Dal Lago, Katy Shaw, Monty French and Roman Wilson, aged 10 to 13.

As their section leader, I was truly proud of what they achieved — oh, and the meal was really lovely too!

Their next activity was to be a nighttime hike.

I really do recommend scouts for boys and girls. For more information, email snowgard@aol.com
