Captain Thorne leads the way for Oratory

THE Oratory School’s captain Yew Wen Thorne won the Cadet Champion at Arms at the schools’ meeting held at the NRA ranges at Bisley against strong competition.

Five other Oratory cadets came within the top 26 out of a total entry of 517.

The team of Thorne, Shaw, Dart, Maitland, Nicholls and Farley also won the Challenge Trophy and eight gold medals in the cadet GP rifle match. Four cadets won GP Twenty badges in the GP Challenge Cup, all in the top 20.

The Oratory team also won the Cadet Falling Plates and four gold medals. Sixteen teams entered the competition with The Oratory defeating Pate’s Grammar, Lancing and Sutton Valence, finally beating an impressive Charterhouse in the final to retain the trophy.

The school came third in the RSM Milson Cup, the Cottesloe Vase and the Schools’ Aggregate.

l Last week Thorne won silver in the Ashburton Individual competition. The Oratory student finished in the Cadet Grand Aggregate, alongside cadet S Maitland (12th), out of an entry of 487 cadets.
