WI gives £700 raised at coffee mornings to good causes

MORE than £700 has been given to good causes by Sonning Common WI.

About 50 people attended a special presentation of cheques by branch president Jenny Ward and fund-raising chairwoman Gill Hayward.

The recipients were the Sonning Common Lunch Club, the Club SC youth club, the Fish volunteer centre and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance, which all recieved £150, and the Friends of Sonning Common Library (£100). A representative of each organisation was invited on to the stage and applauded before making a short speech.

Jose Huggins, from the air ambulance, said: “We’re very grateful for what you have all done and we hope nobody needs us, although it’s a lifesaver.”

Carol Viney, who chairs the youth club’s management committee, said: “I want to thank everyone on behalf of the youth club. We derive a great benefit from the WI and other local community groups.” Freda Buckner, who organises the lunch club, said: “This money really will help us. Our members are so appreciative of what you do for them.”

All the money was raised last year by the WI’s coffee mornings held at the village hall in Wood Lane on the first Wednesday of every month.

These started in 2013 and each year the proceeds have been donated to community groups. Mrs Ward said: “It’s great to welcome these good causes and acknowledge what they’re doing for our great village.”

Mrs Hayward said: “We wanted to welcome members of the community here to give them a chance to meet up with friends or make new friends.

“We have been so grateful to everyone who has supported us and we hope they continue to do so.”

She thanked the Ways and Means Trust, which support the events by selling its goods.
