REDUCING the speed limit on a road in Sonning Common could put it at risk of housing development, says the village’s county councillor.
The parish council wants to reduce the limit on the B481 from 40mph to 30mph as it was one of the suggestions put forward in the village’s neighbourhood plan.
Most of the road through the village already has a 30mph lijmit but it only starts near to the junction with Westleigh Drive when travelling from Emmer Green.
Councillor David Bartholomew said that reducing the speed limit on the A4155 through Shiplake to 30mph had been given as a reason to allow planning permission for two new houses.
“The new speed limit was successfully introduced and the main road became a residential street under legislation,” he said.
“This means that if a developer puts in a planning application they are very likely to get permission.”
Parish councillor Leigh Rawlins said there was already development along parts of the road.
“Any parts that are not are within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which I hope would provide the required protection,” he added.
